There are two stages in the production and certification of pedigreed seed. The first stage involves field production, which much be carried out according to strict regulations and procedures to ensure that the varietal purity and standards of the crop are maintained. The second stage starts after harvest and involves the conditioning, testing and grading of seed by government authorized plants and personnel. All steps in the process are federally mandated, and verified by third party inspections, monitoring and audits. Regulations which govern the production and certification of pedigreed seed include:

Impact of 1991 UPOV Convention
Circular 6 - Regulations and Procedures for Pedigree Seed Crop Production
Canada Seeds Act
Seed Grade Tables
Seeds Regulations
Plant Breeders Rights Act
